Concussions can be addressed by physical therapists

People who hold physical therapy jobs can be helpful to sufferers of serious head trauma, according to a published report.

The Examiner reports roughly 3.8 million concussions occur each year in sports and recreation in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of the head injuries include loss of consciousness, confusion, clumsiness, speech that is slurred, nausea, vomiting, headaches and balance issues, among other health problems.

"Dizziness is a common and unfortunate side-effect of concussion, and vestibular physical therapy will often benefit patients experiencing those symptoms," physical therapist Anthony Goode with ProActive Sports Rehab in Western New York told the news source. "If you are experiencing dizziness or issues with balance, a vestibular physical therapist can teach specific exercises and training that will reduce or end dizziness issues and improve your overall stability."

Additional symptoms of head trauma can include neck and spinal issues, which can be evaluated by a physical therapist to determine the best recovery plan, Goode told the news source.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients manage pain and enhance their range of motion after injuries and operations.
