Congratulations! You made it through your first week as a traveler. Now what?
Many travelers don’t think about down time as they consider taking a travel assignment, at least until they get past week one.
Over the past two years, many of my travelers have reached out to me to share weekend plans and to ask what previous travelers have done at various locations. “How can I find people to meet and what are your recommendations?”
I have always had an equal mix of introverts and extroverts working for me who choose this life for different experiences and expectations. Many travelers will choose locations for sightseeing, friends and family, and outdoor activities, while others select unknown destinations to gain more clinical experiences and expand their resumes. This leads all to ask, “What should I do this weekend?”
Often travelers will connect with outside ideas or influences to maximize their 13 weeks in that area. Coworkers, both local and travelers, may offer ideas. There are different apps, websites, and blogs that can connect you with others in your area with shared interests, such as a jogging club, coffee shops, or hanging out in the local scenes. Many of our travelers will search our hashtag #aurjourney to connect with others who work with us for ideas and meetups.
Now is the perfect time to make new connections, try new cuisines, and stop and smell the roses (maybe visit a local nature area or botanical garden)! One thing I hear often is, “I wish I would have (fill in the blank) while I was in that area!” 13 weeks go by quickly and new travelers will often miss out on great adventures and memories if they aren’t open to getting out and experiencing new things.
Traveling can be an exciting time professionally and personally for all types of personalities. Try and maximize your free time. Who knows when you will get the chance to explore that area again!
“Find your own adventure, then you aren’t on someone’s time table- I like to stop and soak it all in!” Tom S. -Previous Nebraska/Idaho Traveler
