Harvard scientists developed a breakthrough new treatment for Type 1 diabetes.
Using stem cells to create insulin-producing pancreatic cells in mice, the researchers were able to successfully level out blood sugar in the animals' bodies. The treatment could one day free millions of individuals the drudgery of measuring glucose levels, sticking fingers, and watching insulin pumps.
As the rate of diabetes skyrockets across the U.S., travel nursing professionals will continue to serve as a network of support for diabetics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes. Hospital inpatient care amounts to roughly $105 billion in medical costs and reduced productivity, a study from the American Diabetes Association found.
Should the new Harvard treatment prove effective in humans, those on travel nursing assignments may help administer it to eliminate metabolic swings, reduce diabetes complications and lower the hospital costs.
