How to save money while working as a travel nurse

How to save money while traveling

One of the many benefits of being a travel nurse is that you get the chance to explore a variety of destinations all across the U.S. Travel expenses, however, can add up quickly, especially if you’re moving around frequently. The good news is, you can save money whether you’re traveling by plane or car. Keep these tips in mind as you travel the country helping others:

Be careful about where you fill up your tank
If you chose to take a road trip to your destination, don’t just head to the nearest gas pump. Instead, download the smartphone app called Gas Buddy. The app will tell you which stations near you have the lowest gas price. Simply enter the city and state or the ZIP code. It may not seem like a few cents would make much of a difference, but those cents really add up in the long run.

Carry a reusable water bottle
It’s important for you to stay hydrated on the road, but instead of buying bottles of water everywhere you go, simply bring your own reusable container. Fill it up throughout the day at home or at work.

Avoid touristy areas for dinner
If there’s always a restaurant you’ve wanted to try out that’s located in a tourist hot spot, go for it, as long as you’re not doing this on a frequent basis. It’s better to look beyond the tourist traps, which can be 20 to 50 percent higher than areas that aren’t flooded with visitors. For instance, if you’re traveling to Las Vegas, it’s best to avoid restaurants and eateries on the strip, and venture to places outside of the area.

Pack your meals for work
Preparing your breakfasts, lunches and dinners and taking them to work versus eating out or in the hospital cafeteria could save you a bundle in the long run. Plus, you control the ingredients. Keep your kitchen stocked and plan ahead.

Travel via public transportation
Instead of renting a car or taking a taxi everywhere, consider taking public transportation such as buses and trains. These options are likely less expensive and will still get you where you need to go.

Save on that weekend getaway
If you’re using some time off during your assignment or are planning a weekend escape, shop smart. Before you book a flight, compare multiple airlines to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Pay attention to travel times available and aim for a less expensive flight. You may also be able to save yourself some money by booking your flight, rental car and hotel all in the same package. Depending on the package, you may even get access to extras such as sightseeing tours or spa treatments.

Lots of popular hotels, including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, etc. have loyalty programs that can save you a lot of cash in the long run. When you enroll in a loyalty program and continue to stay at that particular hotel when you travel, you can earn points that get you free nights.

You may be able to find great deals by keeping up to date with various airlines’ social media accounts such as Twitter and Facebook. You can also sign up for email fare alerts so you always know how and when to get the best travel deals.
