Illinois alderman returns to classroom for nursing course

A city official in the capital of Illinois has embarked on a career change that has him chasing a nursing job, according to a published report.

Alderman Steve Dove of Springfield, when not busy conducting the business of Chicago's Ward 9, has begun courses with the Capital Area School of Practical Nursing, The State Journal-Register reports. The program will take nine months to complete and the 43-year-old is moving on from serving as a real estate broker to a familiar field.

"I grew up in the hospital," the son of a late cardiologist told the news source, noting his death two years ago prompted him to take stock. "I've been in a hospital since I was 4, doing rounds with Dad. It's always felt like home."

He discovered how much he missed hospital visits to see his dad, which occurred as many as three times per week. But he's toiling to re-acclimatize himself to the rigors of the classroom, in which he said he has not been seated for a quarter century.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses typically pursue a bachelor's degree, an associate's degree or a program diploma.
