Medical careers climb during August

Medical centers augmented their staffs by 5,700 in August, which helped bring the number of medical career jobs created last month to 17,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Though the national unemployment rate remains around 8.1 percent throughout various industries, healthcare is one of the industries that saw increases during the final month of summer, the federal agency announced on September 7. The breakdown is ambulatory healthcare services adding 14,200 jobs, 700 of which were at doctors' offices; 1,200 at outpatient care centers; and 7,200 jobs were created at settings for home health services.

For the three-month period of June through August, the average of healthcare jobs created every month was 15,000.

For the week ending September 8, the seasonally adjusted advance figure for initial claims amounted to 382,000, which represents an increase of 15,000 from the week prior, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
