New York nurses discuss heroism for babies during Hurricane Sandy

People who hold nursing jobs at an intensive care unit for babies in New York acted heroically in late October when Hurricane Sandy presented a grave threat to public safety, according to a published report.

The caregivers at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Langone Medical Center at New York University had to contend with failing power sources, which gave them no choice but to evacuate the babies, ABC reports. Seven of the nurses who helped evacuate some of the babies who weighed as little as two pounds were featured on the popular television show 20/20.

"Everybody ran to a patient to make sure that the babies were fine," Nicola Zanzotto-Tagle said on the feature television show, according to the news source. "If you had your phone with a flashlight on the phone, you held it right over the baby."

Alarms were ringing and backups were activated – but then the generator stopped working and the East River began flooding the medical center.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses help advocate for patients' healthcare needs while also providing emotional support.
