Nurse collects bachelor’s degree – at age 84

After years and years of working as a nurse and very slowly pecking away at academic credentials, a Missouri woman finalized those obligations earlier this month and soon will be bestowed her bachelor of science degree, according to a published report.

Leslie Nivens, 84, has retired but that did not stop her from the achievement at Cox College in Springfield, The Associated Press reports. Her experience with nursing jobs was helped by the various nursing coursework she completed but she never did enough to earn a bachelor's degree.

"I just picked up a couple here and a couple there," the octogenarian told the news source earlier this month.

She resumed studies last year after having toured the school, where the president offered her an honorary degree. But she turned down that opportunity in lieu of completing the required studies to earn her degree.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing jobs are forecast to grow 26 percent during the 10-year period leading up to 2020.
