Nurses’ phone calls help reduce re-admission, save money, survey states

People who hold nursing jobs can help their patients save money and return to the medical center for treatment less by picking up the telephone and making a few calls, according to a recent study.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health had researchers probe more than 600 patients who were enrolled in the Coordinated Transitional Care program in Madison, according to the study, which was cited by Fierce Health Care.

"Patients don't mind a phone call," assistant medicine professor Amy Kind at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public health said. "Our role is not to complicate the process but to more seamlessly bridge the patient's journey from the hospital to the home and to primary care."

Simple phone calls cut down on the number of patients who were readmitted to the medical center and slash roughly $1,225 in expenses charged to each patient.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses help patients and their families prepare for medical procedures while also offering emotional support during challenging times.
