Palliative care training for U.S. veterans to enhance nursing schools

U.S. military veterans battling life-threatening illnesses got a helping hand in their fight, a press release states.

The Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation tapped the City of Hope with increased funding for end-of-life nursing education. The effort seeks to endow people who are driving toward holding nursing jobs with better palliative care education.

The training will be orchestrated through the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium, which is overseen by City of Hope and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The effort will dovetail with the Joining Forces Initiative, a White House drive committed to bettering nursing schools.

"AACN applauds the Milbank Foundation for their generous support and for taking decisive action to enhance veteran care by supporting nursing education," president Jane Kirschling with AACN said. "Given the critical role that nurses play in providing patient care, we are hopeful that other stakeholders and foundations will step forward to advance the work underway to better meet the healthcare needs of veterans, service members, and their families."

The need to enhance services for hospice and palliative care will continue to be necessary for Vietnam-era veterans through 2034, the press release states.
