Pediatric occupational therapist aids Mississippi boy’s recovery from neurological disorders

A 7-year-old Southeast Mississippi boy has made large strides in his battle against Asperger's Disorder and a sensory processing disorder, according to a published report.

Diagnosed with the disorder about four years ago, Hugh Hopper has fought hard with the assistance of someone who holds a pediatric occupational therapy job, The Mississippi Press reports. But challenges remain for the elementary school student like overcoming delayed fine motor skills, clumsiness, a lack of coordination and upper body weakness.

"My goal is to help as many children as I can lead full and happy lives by providing specialized pediatric therapy, parent education and resources in their local community," occupational therapist Kellie Hughes told the news source, noting she holds 13 years' worth of credentials working with children on the Gulf Coast of the U.S.

One month after she embarked on working with Hugh, she could already determine that his advances include his level of balance, the coordination he now has and how much stronger he has become.
