Human enterovirus D68, the rare respiratory virus that has sickened hundreds of children across the US, has already spread to 27 states.

From mid-August to late-September, a total of 175 people from California to New York were confirmed to have a respiratory illness triggered by EV-D68, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel nursing professionals should keep an eye out for symptoms such as fever, runny nose and body aches in infants, children and teenagers, since they are most likely to become ill. Most of the children who became sick with the EV-D68 infection in Missouri and Illinois had difficulty breathing, and some had wheezing.

There is no specific treatment for people with this respiratory illness. While healthcare specialists are working to mitigate the outbreak, travel nurses can protect themselves by washing their hands often, avoiding touching their face with unwashed hands and disinfecting touched surfaces frequently.
