We see it every day and everywhere on TV, billboards, Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. I’m talking about the backlash of mental illness. Statistics show that 1 in 4 people experiences mental illness in a given year. The stigma of mental health can leave those who suffer from it feeling alone and isolated with their affliction. A lot of the issues we are facing in the news (suicides, homicide, increase in chronic medical conditions, increase in crime and unemployment) can all be backlash from the stigma of getting help. So what can we do? There are many places to learn and help spread the awareness. One of the largest national organizations is NAMI, the National Alliance of Mental Illness. You can get more information at www.NAMI.org.
