Woman injured in car crash preaches seat belt use

A Colorado woman who was critically injured in a car accident three months ago devotes her time and energy to publicly advising people to fasten their seatbelts, according to a published report.

Shelby Debell, 19, was one of four who were injured on the evening of August 15 when the driver of the car in which they were travelling fell asleep, The Jamestown Sun reports. The car flipped over, Debell was ejected and her injures have prompted Debell to recoup with people who hold physical therapy jobs.

She said she was rescued by people who initially thought she was an animal that they intended to move off the road. But they called emergency services once they realized there was a person in need.

"I hope people understand this can happen to them," she told the news source. "I saw it happen to others, but I never thought it would happen to me."

She already finished one regimen of physical therapy, which was six weeks long. She has entered another one.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients recover from injuries, surgery and illnesses.
