5.6 million healthcare jobs to be created through 2020, report states

The next eight years will see the creation of 5.6 million healthcare jobs in the U.S., representing an opportunity for healthcare staffing firms, according to a published report.

The industry is in high demand in the nation and commands a workforce that is double the average industry, according to a report issued by the Center on Education and Workforce of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Cited by The Los Angeles Times, the report states the healthcare industry encompasses roughly 18 percent of the U.S. economy, the globe's largest economic system.

As many as 13 percent of all jobs in the U.S. will be within the healthcare industry, the report states. This includes support positions like accountants at medical centers, salespeople for pharmaceutical firms and administrative aides in physicians' offices.

Of those jobs, more than 80 percent will demand post-secondary education and training. Nursing opportunities are projected to gain 26 percent, and will demand advanced educational requirements.

The healthcare industry also employs the biggest percentage of foreign-born workers of all industries, according to the report. That figure totals 22 percent.
