Healthcare careers projected to keep growing

As roughly 30 million people become eligible for health insurance after the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in late June, healthcare careers are forecast to continue growing, according to a published report.

The healthcare system is gearing up to endure the sizable amount of enrollees and specialties throughout the industry that are projected to grow very rapidly during the next eight years, Advance Web reports. Two regions, healthcare IT and nursing, already have begun seeing the growth develop.

“Like many healthcare organizations, we have been operating [against] a physician and nursing shortage for quite a while … and our hiring volume has increased significantly,” talent acquisition director Willie French with The Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas, told the news source.

The first and second quarters of this year also saw job openings for physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners increase 10 percent and 16 percent respectively. The second quarter saw openings for skilled nurses skyrocket 40 percent as compared to the first quarter.

Nurses’ responsibilities include providing and coordinating patient care while also educating patients and the public about prominent issues within healthcare, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
