Connecticut hospital calls on medical staffing during inclement weather

A hospital in the capital of Connecticut that serves a region afflicted by a late October fluke snowstorm sought additional medical staffing to cover for the influx of patients, the Hartford Courant reports.

New mothers, people needing oxygen after their homes lost power and other visitors seeking food pushed the limits of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center staffing needs and prompted administrators to call for back-ups, according to Kate Roche, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the medical facility.

“Those that we are able to reach are coming in,” Roche told the publication earlier this month. “For the most part, the response has been excellent.”

Hospital officials went through the office of Governor Dannel Malloy to inform those filling nursing jobs and other responsibilities to maintain close contact with healthcare staffing officials at their respective hospitals to see if their services were needed.

The Associated Press reports the top law enforcement official in Connecticut said on Wednesday his offices will probe how the state’s biggest power provider handled outages to customers following the pre-Halloween tempest.
