Brain-damaged girl’s motivation spurred by pop icon

An 11-year-old Western Pennsylvania girl with severe brain damage was lacking verve and enthusiasm for working with people who hold physical therapy jobs, according to a published report.

But then: enter stage left teen pop sensation Justin Bieber.

The Tribune-Review reports Bailie Zilli of South Greensburg has learned how to use a wheelchair and a walker as a result of a June 2003 incident where she nearly drowned as a 2-year-old. She was found floating facedown in the swimming pool of a neighbor.

Her physical therapists discovered that the best way to encourage her is to fire up the pop star's music.

"One day when she was not particularly motivated, we thought, 'Let's try some Justin.' We pulled him up on a video on a cellphone. She heard the first couple of notes and she was right on it," physical therapist Diane Campbell told the news source.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapists help patients with rehabilitation, injuries and the management of pain.
