As the Ebola virus continues to sweep international headlines, healthcare staffing professionals and the wider medical community have been racing to find a cure.
Iowa drug developer NewLine Genetics said it’s planning on testing a possible Ebola vaccine on humans as soon as possible. Scientists told the Associated Press that the vaccine has proven 100 percent effective in preventing deadly Ebola infections in non-human primates.
Additionally, World Health Organization officials reported the first round of clinical trials for another potential cure, made by GlaxoSmithKline, could begin by early September. However, MSN News reported this vaccine may not be available until 2015.
The Ebola outbreak has claimed more than 1,000 lives in West Africa and is deemed a widespread public health emergency.
Any travel nursing professionals traveling to West Africa should exercise extreme caution and look at government health websites before departing.
