The Number One Quality Recruiters Look For In a Traveler

What do you think are the top qualities a recruiter looks for in a traveler? My first thoughts were qualities like specialty, experience, tenure, and certifications. But what happens when you are up against someone with the exact same qualities?

In my opinion the number one quality recruiters look for in a traveler is – (drum roll please!) timely, open communication. I am not talking about a traveler who only texts or emails. I am talking about someone who will answer the phone or return a call in a timely manner. Remember, phone conversations are not dead (click here to read a recent blog on the topic). In fact, they are easier and quicker than texting and emailing. By answering the phone or returning a call, you tell the recruiter and manager that you want the job and you are able to communicate effectively with your co-workers.

Open communication is a quality hiring managers look for as well. I recently had a manager tell me that if the traveler does not answer the phone or return a call that same day, that manager passes on the traveler. Hospitals need to hire fast so they are hiring the first candidate that answers the phone or calls back within 24 hours.

Communication is not just about being timely, but open and honest as well. Believe it or not, I like hearing from a traveler that they do not want a job or they are already traveling. Odd, right? Here’s what I mean:

Just accepted a contract:
Traveler: I just accepted a contract and it ends in 13 weeks.
Me: CONGRATS! I will update your availability date so you do not get calls until closer to your end date.

Not interested in the job:
Traveler:
I am not interested in that job in Texas.
Me: I understand. I will take Texas out of your state preference and you will not get any calls about Texas jobs. What states are you interested in?

Working full-time:
Traveler:
I am working full-time and not interested.
Me:
Congrats on the full-time job. I will update your file. What do you enjoy most about your job?

What are the benefits for you, by openly communicating in a timely manner with a recruiter?

  • You get jobs you are interested in.
  • You get fewer phone calls.
  • You save time.
