5 Ways to Make the Most out of Your Temporary Home

As you start to embark on your travel journey, it may seem scary that you’re not going to have a “permanent” home for the next 13 weeks (or more), but there are plenty of ways for you to feel right at home in each new location.

Find your go to place

First, find the things that you enjoy in your daily life now and see if they translate to your new city. For example, if you are part of a gym or fitness class, see if they have countrywide access. I know many people who travel for work and are members at Orange Theory Fitness because every city they go to, they can attend classes AND have the chance to meet other people in a setting they are already comfortable in.

Do your research before you go

If you are going somewhere new, chances are you are not aware of the cute coffee shop that everyone loves or the Sunday night live music spot, BUT somewhere online you can find all that information. Some good ideas to get your started are:

  • Check Groupon. They have great deals on local favorites – whether its food or a local craft store you will definitely find a new favorite.
  • Check travel sites like TripAdvisor and schedule some time throughout your contract to visit the attractions near you.
  • Read Yelp! Get some ideas on what other people just like you suggest.

Feel free to invite friends or family to come visit you

If you are a newer traveler (or even an experienced veteran who wants to share their experience with others) take the opportunity to invite loved ones to come visit you within the first few weeks. This can help you get out and mingle in the new city meanwhile having that safety net of knowing someone at the same time. This can help you try new things and see what places you want to regular throughout your time.

Get to know your co-workers

These are the people who are going to be around you most often, so step out of your comfort zone and exchange numbers with people day one! Once you have that initial conversation all the nerves kind of subside and you quickly have someone to do happy hour with or hike the nearest mountain. Also my bet is that if they are travelers they are having the same thought as you – so why not? This will make the experience more enjoyable for all involved and can positively impact both of your careers.

Lastly, share your experience with the world

Another idea is to start a blog and create an online community that can make you feel at home no matter where your travels take you. It may seem silly or you might think no one cares what you’re thinking (trust me I felt the same way at first), but I bet you someone out there will be touched by your experiences and reach out to you.
