By Brent Brichacek, Allied Branch Manager, Aureus Medical
I joined Aureus Medical 19 years ago. As I look back at work through these last 18 months, it feels like déjà vu and reminds me of the distress from 2008-2009, except this time it’s been a global nightmare. An economic downturn, millions of people laid off from their jobs and losing insurance benefits. Hospital census dropped as many put off elective surgeries due to not having insurance or the funds to pay the bills, or from facilities having temporarily pause elective surgeries.
Facilities were forced to reduce staff and operate short-staffed in many cases as departments were faced with deep budget cuts. Travelers came off the road and looked for comfort and security in full time, non-travel positions if they could find them. They didn’t do it because they didn’t love traveling, they did it due to the economic uncertainty. It was a scary time and the pool of available travelers shrunk for available contract positions.
However, just as in 2009, and as we’re seeing now in 2021, the economy slowly came back. The unemployment rate came down and workers received health insurance coverage. Hospitals began to get busy again and new staff positions were created to provide service to the many patients who had put off elective surgeries that were recommended months or even years before. It was, and has been, a great sigh of relief.
With my tenure and experience with Aureus Medical, I can tell you with great certainty: If you have any hesitation about traveling, the travel market has never been stronger. Facilities are in desperate need of extra help to make up for lost time.
If you’re a current traveler out on the road, thank you; we need you and many more just like you.
