Is your appearance as a travel nurse damaging patient care?

A professional appearance is touted as one of the key ingredients to success, but what does that mean for a travel nurse wearing scrubs every day? While there is no need to run home and throw a suit coat over scrubs, you should be aware of how you look on the job and how it could affect your career.

Patients make snap decisions upon meeting a nurse, and dingy sneakers or worn-out scrubs can compromise their confidence in your abilities as a medical professional. Therefore, a travel nurse may wish to take care to appear washed, wear clean scrubs in good condition and put her best foot forward with tidy sneakers.

"A person can be fired because the company doesn’t like your shoes," said Robert D. Lipman, manager at the New York employment firm Lipman & Plesur, LLP, according to Burleson Consulting.

While the statement may seem a bit extreme for the medical field, it holds true to an extent. Your appearance can negatively impact your professional growth, your patient's confidence and even how coworkers view your competence.
