Housing
If you are planning on bringing your loved ones with you, keep in mind what you may need to accommodate everyone for the duration of the assignment. It is important to know that most travel agencies will allow you to bring your family with you; however, they are only financially responsible for you as a traveler. You may have to pay any differences for housing accommodations. When looking for housing, think about the needs of you and your family. How many bedrooms will you need for everyone? What type of rental are you looking for? How long will your family travel with you?
Year Round vs Summer Months
When you are a traveler, your assignment is typically around 13 weeks long. If you are bringing your family along, determine how long you plan on having them with you. Depending on your child/children’s age range, you may be traveling with them all year round or just during a seasonal time. Either option, make sure you check the area that you will be in to see if there are any daycare options. Depending on the length of your contract, research the local school districts to see if that would be an option for your kids. Otherwise, look into online or homeschool programs if able.
Activities
Now that you’re in a new environment with your kiddos, what do you do? Use all your resources! Ask your new coworkers and locals about activities to do around town. The best people to ask are the ones who have been there all their life. They can tell you the ins and outs of the area and the best places to burn off some energy, the best BBQ to try, or the most educational exhibits in town. Also, almost every area has a City of Commerce website to utilize to find all of the best activities around.
Don’t let your kids be the defining factor of not being able to travel. Use these opportunities to make some amazing memories with your loved ones. This could be a chance of a lifetime for all of you!
