As I usher another one of my sons off to college this week, I stop to reflect on his future. What is the job market going to look like in four years? What can he do now to make himself stand out to future employers? How can he make the most out of his time in college? Here are five easy tips to ensure that you get the most out of your college educational experience.
Get involved
As you step on campus for the first time it may seem big and overwhelming. Getting involved in activities allows you to see things on a smaller scale. Also, future employers like to look at a resume and see someone who has done more than just attend classes. College clubs or organizations typically meet weekly or bi-weekly for a short amount of time. If you enjoy playing baseball or softball, join a recreational team on campus. There are academic clubs for most fields of study. Get involved with student government. Pick at least one group to join and try to join sooner vs. later.
Network
It’s never too early to network. The person sitting next to you in US Government may run his or her own business in the future. Suggest a study group if you notice a core group of students on the same track as you. Talk to your professors and make sure they know who you are. Your professors have connections in the world outside of college, so utilize them. You may also need to use them as a reference when applying for that first job.
Be present
It’s easy for most incoming freshmen to be overwhelmed with the amount of freedom and time they have on their hands. Make it a priority to make it to class. There is information being given during lecture that will not be found in the textbook. There are group discussions happening in class that you won’t know about if you’re busy playing Fortnite in your dorm room. You need to be present in order to network and get involved!
Work and Internships
Holding down a job while going to college shows future employers you’re not only a hard worker, but can also multi-task. If you have the opportunity to work in the field you’re studying, make sure to apply. If you’re a nursing student, then work as a CNA (or something similar) while in college. You’re getting yourself in front of future employers early on. Additionally, make sure to take advantage of internships while in college. Visit career services early during your academic career and find out what internships are available. Both working a job and doing an internship will make you marketable and add valuable experience to your resume.
Volunteer
Make time to volunteer while in college. Giving back to your community is important. Most employers have some type of volunteering set up for their employees. They want to hire someone who has made time to volunteer. It may be the one thing on your resume that sets you apart from your competition.
For all of you in college or just starting college, make the most of your time. Get involved with some type of activity through school. Make those networking connections with your classmates, professors, and employers. You want to put your best foot forward while in school to make you marketable when you graduate.
