Traveling nurses should be open to new procedures

A travel nurse is likely be aware that medicine is not practiced the same in every hospital. There are procedural differences in accordance with hospital regulations that can create significant differences in the day-to-day work.

Some nurses new to traveling may have difficulty acclimating to the ways of a new hospital. It is important to note that most of the differences are procedural. It is also crucial to remember that different is not necessarily a negative word.

"Some nurses have spent their entire careers in that one hospital, and they love it there. Be respectful because every place has its good and bad points. Take time to scope out your surroundings, introduce yourself, and ease your way into the unit. Help the people around you feel comfortable with your presence," Marian Hemingway, RNC told Healthcare Traveler.

Travel assignments are about experiencing new things. A travel nurse may need to remind herself of this as she confronts new things she was not expecting. The new clinic, procedures, atmosphere and people are all part of the experience – take the time to take it in before making judgments about it.
